Conrad Gesner’s Ornithology

Another ornithology appears in print the same year as Belon’s: the third of five volumes of the most celebrated and seminal of Renaissance natural histories, the Historiae Animalium of Swiss physician and scholar Conrad Gesner (1516–65). While Gesner mentions Belon’s identification of the bird of paradise with the Phoenix, he presents the two kinds of birds separately in his book of birds, De avium natura,14 and shows a footless bird in the woodcut that is copied or adapted in natural histories thereafter (fig. 16.1). At the end of his description of the bird of paradise, Gesner writes that a friend, Guilandinus, refuted Pigafetta’s claim that the bird had legs, saying he had seen and touched a footless bird of paradise—on two occasions, no less. Gesner himself does not discuss the legitimacy of bird of paradise lore.15
